What are Embedded Systems?An embedded system is a computer system integrated within a device to perform a specific function. Unlike general-purpose computers, embedded systems are designed to carry out one or a few specialised tasks very efficiently.

Examples of Embedded SystemsEmbedded systems are everywhere! For example, the microprocessor in a washing machine controls the wash cycle, while the system in a car’s anti-lock braking system (ABS) ensures safe braking. They are designed to work reliably within the device they’re part of.

Characteristics of Embedded SystemsEmbedded systems have distinctive features: they are designed for specific tasks, are often small and efficient, and operate in real-time environments (responding to inputs instantly).

Why Are Embedded Systems Important?Embedded systems are critical because they ensure devices like cars, appliances, and medical equipment function efficiently and reliably. They save cost and power compared to general-purpose computers.
