Welcome! You've already learned about how the CPU works and how it interacts with other components, like registers and cache. Today, we’re going to explore embedded systems, which are computers built into devices for specific tasks.
What are Embedded Systems? An embedded system is a computer system integrated within a device to perform a specific function. Unlike general-purpose computers, embedded systems are designed to carry out one or a few specialised tasks very efficiently.
Examples of Embedded SystemsEmbedded systems are everywhere! For example, the microprocessor in a washing machine controls the wash cycle, while the system in a car’s anti-lock braking system (ABS) ensures safe braking. They are designed to work reliably within the device they’re part of.
Quick check: Which of the following is an example of an embedded system?

Characteristics of Embedded SystemsEmbedded systems have distinctive features: they are designed for specific tasks, are often small and efficient, and operate in real-time environments (responding to inputs instantly).
Embedded systems are designed for {{blank0}} tasks and often operate in {{blank1}} environments.
