Revision Genie is an educational platform. Its main purpose is to help students learn and revise - it is not a social network. However, some features let users see content created by other users, so parts of our service fall within the scope of the UK Online Safety Act 2023. This statement explains how we keep those features safe, what is not allowed, and how to report a problem.
It sits alongside our Acceptable Use Policy, Safeguarding Policy and Children's Code Compliance page, and is written in plain language so that younger users can understand it. If you are under 18, it may help to read it with a parent, guardian or teacher.
We design Revision Genie to be safe by default, especially for users under 18.
We do not allow illegal content, or content that is harmful to children.
We limit how users can interact, so the service cannot be used like an open social network.
We give everyone clear, easy ways to report content or behaviour, and we act on what is reported.
We keep our safety measures under review as the law and Ofcom's codes of practice continue to develop.
Most of Revision Genie is private to you. Only a limited set of features involve content from other users:
Community flashcards, lessons and mock exams that users choose to publish for others to study.
Custom AI tutors ('genies') that a user chooses to share via a link.
Public profiles, which show a display name, avatar, learning stats and recent achievements.
Live quizzes, where players see each other's chosen nicknames and emoji reactions.
Class spaces, where a teacher and their students can post messages, set up and managed by the school.
Following other users, and friends leaderboards.
Importantly, we do NOT provide open one-to-one private messaging between strangers, and there is no public free-text comment wall. Class messaging is school-managed and limited to that class.
The following are prohibited anywhere on Revision Genie, including in any user-created content, nickname, profile or shared material. This list is not exhaustive - see our Acceptable Use Policy for the full rules:
Illegal content of any kind.
Content that sexualises, endangers or exploits children.
Threats, harassment, bullying or hatred directed at any person or group.
Content that encourages suicide, self-harm or eating disorders.
Violent, extremist or terrorist content.
Content promoting illegal drugs, weapons, gambling or other age-restricted activities.
Impersonating staff, teachers or other people.
Spam, scams, or contacting other users for non-educational purposes.
Sharing personal contact details, or trying to move conversations off the platform.
Safe-by-design defaults: privacy-protective defaults for under-18s, no open private messaging, no precise location, and no behavioural advertising. See our Children's Code Compliance page.
Nickname filtering: names entered in live quizzes are automatically checked against a block-list (including disguised spellings) and rejected if inappropriate.
Reporting tools: every user can report content or behaviour (see section 6).
Human review and takedown: our team can review reported content and remove it, disable a shared link, hide a published item, or suspend an account.
Blocking: you can block another user, which stops them following you, inviting you to quizzes, or appearing to you.
Safeguarding monitoring: AI conversations that suggest a user may be at risk are flagged for trained staff to review, and may be escalated to the appropriate authorities. See our Safeguarding Policy.
We are honest that no system is perfect. Some public content is reviewed mainly when it is reported, which is why reporting matters.
If you see something that breaks these rules, or that worries you, please tell us. There are several ways:
Use the in-app support widget, available on any page.
Use the report option on the content or user where it is offered (for example, reporting a player in a live quiz, or reporting a user's profile).
Give an AI message a thumbs-down to report a problem with that response.
Email us at support@revisiongenie.com.
What happens next: we aim to acknowledge reports quickly and to review them promptly. Anything concerning a child's immediate safety is treated as urgent and prioritised. We will take appropriate action, which may include removing content, disabling a share link, or suspending an account.
If you are not satisfied with how we handled your report, you can ask us to review the decision by replying to us or emailing support@revisiongenie.com. For data-protection complaints you can also contact the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999.
Childline: 0800 1111 (free and confidential).
NSPCC (worried about a child): 0808 800 5000.
You can report child sexual abuse material to the Internet Watch Foundation at iwf.org.uk, or report concerns about online child sexual abuse to CEOP at ceop.police.uk.
We review this statement as our features change and as the Online Safety Act's codes of practice and Ofcom guidance develop. We will update the 'Last Updated' date when we make material changes.
