Welcome!Today we'll explore the fascinating structure and function of the heart and blood vessels. By the end, you'll understand how they work together to transport blood throughout the body.
The HeartThe heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood around the body. It has four chambers: two atria (upper chambers) and two ventricles (lower chambers). The heart works continuously to circulate oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.
Blood VesselsBlood vessels are the tubes that carry blood throughout the body. There are three main types: arteries, veins, and capillaries. Each type has a unique structure suited to its function in circulation.
Quick check: What is the main function of the heart?

ArteriesArteries carry blood away from the heart. They have thick, elastic walls to withstand high pressure as blood is pumped out forcefully. The largest artery is the aorta.
Arteries carry blood {{blank0}} the heart and have {{blank1}} walls.

VeinsVeins carry blood back to the heart. They have thinner walls than arteries and contain valves to prevent backflow of blood. This ensures blood flows in one direction.

CapillariesCapillaries are the smallest blood vessels. Their thin walls allow for the exchange of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nutrients between blood and tissues.
Which blood vessel type allows for nutrient and oxygen exchange?

Blood Flow Through the HeartBlood flows through the heart in a specific sequence. Deoxygenated blood enters the right atrium, moves to the right ventricle, and is pumped to the lungs. Oxygenated blood then returns to the left atrium, moves to the left ventricle, and is pumped to the rest of the body.
Which of the following are parts of the heart involved in blood flow? (Select all that apply)
