Welcome! You've already learned about energy stores, transfers, and efficiency. Now, let's explore renewable and non-renewable energy resources, building on that foundation!
What are Energy Resources?Energy resources are sources we use to generate electricity or other forms of energy. They are classified as renewable (can be replenished) or non-renewable (finite and will run out).
Renewable Energy ResourcesRenewable resources include solar, wind, hydroelectric, tidal, geothermal, and biomass. These naturally replenish and are considered sustainable. For example, sunlight is endless, and wind keeps blowing, so we can harness them repeatedly without running out.
Which of the following is a renewable energy resource?
Start the lesson to answer this multiple choice question
Non-Renewable Energy ResourcesNon-renewable resources include fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas, as well as nuclear fuel. These are finite resources that cannot be replenished once used. For example, burning coal releases energy, but it takes millions of years to form new coal, so it is not sustainable.
Coal, oil, and natural gas are examples of {{blank0}} energy resources. Wind and solar are examples of {{blank1}} resources.

Advantages and DisadvantagesRenewable resources reduce environmental impact and don’t run out, but they depend on conditions like weather. For example, solar panels need sunlight.Non-renewable resources are reliable and produce large amounts of energy, but they harm the environment and will eventually deplete.

Environmental ImpactRenewable energy reduces greenhouse gas emissions and pollution. For instance, wind turbines produce clean energy. Non-renewable energy, like burning coal, releases carbon dioxide, contributing to global warming.
Which of the following are disadvantages of non-renewable resources? (Select all that apply)

Applications and ExamplesRenewable resources are used for powering homes and vehicles—for example, solar panels for electricity or biofuels for transport. Non-renewable resources are used in industry and electricity generation—for example, coal-fired power stations.
Which energy resource is most likely to contribute to global warming?
