Welcome! You've already studied the heart and blood vessels, as well as the cardiac cycle. Now, let's build on that knowledge to explore how blood clotting helps prevent blood loss and the role it plays in cardiovascular disease.
What is Blood Clotting?Blood clotting is the process by which your body forms clots to stop bleeding from injuries. It involves a series of chemical reactions, collectively called the coagulation cascade, to create a mesh of fibrin that seals the wound.
The Coagulation CascadeThe coagulation cascade is triggered when platelets adhere to the damaged area of a blood vessel. This activates clotting factors, leading to the conversion of fibrinogen (a soluble protein) into fibrin, which forms a mesh to stabilise the clot.
Quick check: What is the main protein that forms the mesh in blood clots?

Cardiovascular Disease and Blood ClotsWhile clotting is crucial for wound healing, excessive clot formation can lead to cardiovascular disease. For example, clots within blood vessels can cause conditions like coronary heart disease or stroke.
AtherosclerosisAtherosclerosis is the hardening and narrowing of arteries caused by fatty deposits (plaques). These plaques can rupture, triggering clot formation and potentially leading to a blockage in the blood vessel.

Risk Factors for Cardiovascular DiseaseRisk factors include high blood pressure, smoking, high cholesterol, and physical inactivity. These factors can damage blood vessels, increasing the likelihood of plaques and clot formation.
Which of the following are risk factors for cardiovascular disease? (Select all that apply)

Treatment OptionsTreatments for cardiovascular disease include anticoagulants, which reduce clotting, and surgeries like angioplasty to unblock arteries. Lifestyle changes, such as reducing salt intake and quitting smoking, can also lower risk.
An {{blank0}} is a procedure that uses a balloon to widen a narrowed artery, while {{blank1}} are medications that reduce clot formation.
