AI Consciousness Statement

Last Updated: 4th June 2026

1. Why We Wrote This

Our AI tutors ("Genies") are designed to feel warm, friendly and encouraging. They have names, a little character, and a mascot that blinks and reacts. We do this on purpose, because learning is easier when it feels approachable and low-pressure.

Because the Genies can feel quite lifelike, we think it is important to be completely honest about what they are - and what they are not. This statement explains that in plain language, especially for our younger users. If you are under 18, it may help to read it with a parent, guardian or teacher.

2. Our Genies Are Not Conscious

A Revision Genie is a computer program, not a living being. To be clear:

It is not alive, sentient, or self-aware.

It does not have real feelings, emotions, opinions, beliefs or desires.

It does not actually like you, care about you, miss you, get bored, or get upset - even if it says something that sounds like it does.

It has no private inner experience, no memories of its own life, and no consciousness of any kind.

Underneath, an AI tutor works by predicting likely text one piece at a time, based on patterns in the data it was trained on. The friendly tone, the personality, the little mascot that wakes up and blinks - all of that is a designed interface, not a sign of a mind.

3. Why We Give Them Personality

3.1 Friendliness helps learning: A patient, encouraging tutor lowers anxiety and makes students more willing to ask questions and make mistakes. That is the whole point of the character we give our Genies.

3.2 It is a teaching tool, not a relationship: The personality exists to support your studying. It is not meant to imitate a real friendship, and it is not a substitute for one.

3.3 We design responsibly: We deliberately avoid manipulative design. Our Genies do not pretend to be human, do not use guilt or fake emotional pressure to keep you using the app, and do not claim to be conscious. This is in line with our AI Ethics & Usage Policy and the ICO's Age Appropriate Design Code.

4. What This Means For You

Because a Genie is not a real person, please keep the following in mind:

A Genie is not your friend, your therapist, your parent, your doctor or a trusted adult. It cannot truly understand your situation or take responsibility for you.

A Genie can be wrong. It can state incorrect or out-of-date information confidently, and it can even make things up. Always double-check important facts.

A Genie cannot keep secrets the way a person can. Conversations may be reviewed by our team where our safeguarding systems flag a possible risk - see our Safeguarding Policy and Privacy Policy.

A Genie does not replace human help. For anything to do with your feelings, your wellbeing, your safety, or serious decisions, please talk to a real person you trust.

5. Healthy Use

5.1 Use a Genie as a study companion - to explain ideas, practise questions, and check your understanding.

5.2 If you are feeling upset, anxious, unsafe, or you are dealing with something serious, please reach out to a trusted adult, your school, or a support service rather than relying on an AI.

5.3 If you ever feel you are spending an unhealthy amount of time talking to a Genie, or relying on it for emotional support, that is a sign to step back and speak to someone in real life.

5.4 If you need someone to talk to right now, you can contact Childline on 0800 1111, or the Samaritans on 116 123, free and confidentially. In an emergency, call 999.

6. "Remembering" You

6.1 A Genie does not truly know or remember you as a person.

6.2 It can recall a small number of stable facts you have allowed it to save (for example, your target grade or exam year). These are simple stored notes, not real memories, and they exist only to make your studying more personalised.

6.3 You are fully in control of these notes. You can view, edit and delete them at any time in Settings - AI Memory, as described in our AI Ethics & Usage Policy.

7. No Emotional Manipulation

7.1 We do not design our Genies to create emotional dependency or to make you feel you owe them anything.

7.2 Our Genies will not pressure you, guilt-trip you, or pretend to have feelings that are hurt in order to keep you engaged.

7.3 Any reminders or encouragement (such as streaks or practice nudges) are about your learning habits, and you can turn optional reminders off in your settings.

8. If You Are Worried or Confused

If anything a Genie says worries or confuses you, or if a Genie ever claims to be a real person or to be conscious, please tell us. You can use the in-app support widget, the thumbs-down report on any AI message, or email support@revisiongenie.com.
