Welcome!Today we’ll learn about the purpose of the CPU. The CPU is a key part of any computer, and understanding it will help you see how computers work!
What is the CPU?The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is often called the brain of the computer. It processes instructions, performs calculations, and manages the flow of data within the computer system.
The Purpose of the CPUThe CPU handles all processing tasks, including running programs and responding to user actions. It uses the fetch-decode-execute cycle to perform these tasks. Without the CPU, a computer would not be able to function.
Quick check: What is the main role of the CPU in a computer?

Fetch–Decode–Execute CycleThe CPU operates using the fetch-decode-execute cycle. This process allows the CPU to fetch instructions from memory, decode what the instructions mean, and execute them to perform tasks.
The CPU uses the {{blank0}}-{{blank1}}-execute cycle to process instructions.

Registers in the CPURegisters are small, fast storage locations inside the CPU. They temporarily hold data like the address of the next instruction or the result of a calculation. Examples include the Program Counter (PC), Memory Address Register (MAR), and Accumulator.

Factors Affecting CPU PerformanceThree main factors affect how well a CPU performs: clock speed (how fast instructions are processed), cache size (storage for frequently used data), and number of cores (how many tasks it can handle at once).
Which of the following improve CPU performance? (Select all that apply)

Embedded SystemsSome CPUs are part of embedded systems. These are computers built into devices like washing machines or cars, which have specific tasks and are more efficient than general-purpose computers.
Which of the following uses an embedded system?
