This Cookie & Ads Policy explains how Revision Genie uses cookies, similar technologies, and limited advertising. We've written it to be clear and easy to understand, especially for our younger users, their parents, and teachers.
Cookies are small text files stored on your device that help websites remember information about your visit. Think of them like a note that reminds us who you are and how you like to use the site.
When you first visit Revision Genie, you will see a cookie notice with two options:
Essential only - we will use only the cookies that are strictly necessary for the site to work. We will not load advertising scripts and we will not show ads.
Accept all - in addition to essential cookies, we will load Google AdSense to show non-personalised ads on pages that contain ad units. AdSense and the ads themselves may set their own cookies (see section 4).
Your choice is stored on your device and can be changed at any time by clearing the cookie notice or your browser's site data for revisiongenie.com.
These are needed for the website to work properly and keep you safe, and so they do not require your consent under UK law:
Session cookies: temporary, removed when you close your browser. Used to keep you signed in for the current session and to protect login forms.
Authentication cookies: keep you signed in across sessions (NextAuth session token).
Preference cookies: remember your theme preference (light/dark) and that you have dismissed the cookie notice.
Security cookies: protect your account and prevent cross-site request forgery on sign-in.
Creator referral cookie: if you arrive via a creator link, we remember the most recent creator code for up to 30 days so a discount can be applied at checkout.
If you choose Accept all, we load Google AdSense on pages that contain ad units. We have configured AdSense as follows:
Non-personalised: ads are based on the page you are viewing, not your browsing history.
Child-directed treatment is enabled: we flag every ad request as child-directed and as coming from a user under the age of consent, which limits the cookies and identifiers Google can use.
Sensitive categories (e.g. gambling, alcohol, dating) are blocked at the AdSense level.
Ads are not shown to logged-in users on paid plans.
Even with these protections, Google may set cookies to control ad frequency, prevent fraud, and produce aggregate reporting. These cookies are governed by Google's own privacy policy at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.
Revision Genie is designed for school students and we treat all traffic as potentially under the age of consent.
Every ad request applies Google's child-directed treatment and under-age-of-consent flags.
We never use cookies for behavioural profiling of any user, regardless of age.
We do not pass any personally identifying information to AdSense.
You can change your cookie choice at any time by clearing your browser's site data for revisiongenie.com - the cookie notice will reappear and you can choose again.
Essential cookies cannot be turned off in-app, as they are needed for the site to function and to keep you signed in. You can still block them in your browser, but you will not be able to sign in or save your preferences.
If you want to opt out of all advertising cookies set by Google across the web, you can do so at https://adssettings.google.com.
Some third-party services we use may set their own cookies on pages where they are loaded:
Google Sign-In - used only on the sign-in page if you choose to log in with Google.
Microsoft Sign-In - used only on the sign-in page if you choose to log in with Microsoft.
Google AdSense - loaded only if you accept all cookies, on pages that contain ad units, in non-personalised + child-directed mode.
Stripe - used during checkout and on the customer portal to process payments and prevent fraud.
Vercel - our hosting provider may set cookies for load balancing and aggregate site usage.
These services follow their own privacy policies and are bound by data processing agreements with us.
We never sell cookie data.
We do not use cookies for personalised advertising.
We regularly review our practices to meet safeguarding and privacy standards.
If you have questions about our cookie or advertising practices, please contact us at support@revisiongenie.com. For more details about how we protect young users, see our Children's Code Compliance page.
