Welcome!Today, we are going to learn about ratio and proportion. These concepts are incredibly useful for solving problems in everyday life, like sharing costs or scaling recipes. Let's dive in and explore!
What is Ratio?A ratio shows the relationship between two or more quantities, telling us how much of one thing there is compared to another. For example, if there are 2 apples and 3 oranges, the ratio of apples to oranges is 2:3.
Which of these represents the correct ratio of 4 cats to 2 dogs?

What is Proportion?Proportion is the equality of two ratios. For example, if 2:3 is equal to 4:6, then they are proportional. Proportions are useful for solving problems where quantities need to be scaled up or down evenly.
Calculating RatiosTo simplify a ratio, divide all the numbers in the ratio by their highest common factor (HCF). For example, the ratio 8:12 can be simplified by dividing both numbers by their HCF, which is 4. So, the simplified ratio is 2:3.

Dividing Quantities in a RatioTo divide a quantity into a given ratio: 1. Add the parts of the ratio together. 2. Divide the total quantity by the sum of the ratio parts. 3. Multiply the answer by each part of the ratio to find the individual values.
If £120 is divided in the ratio 2:3, the first share will be £{{blank0}} and the second share will be £{{blank1}}.

Working with ProportionsTo solve problems involving proportions, set up a fraction or equation that represents the relationship. For example, if 3 apples cost £9, then 6 apples will cost £18, because 3:9 is proportional to 6:18.
If 4 pens cost £8, how much will 10 pens cost?

Using Ratios in Real LifeRatios and proportions are used in many practical situations. For example, recipes often require ingredients to be mixed in a certain ratio or when comparing distances on a map to actual distances.
