Welcome!Today we'll learn about photosynthesis. This is a key biological process that allows plants to make their own food using sunlight. Let’s explore how it works step by step!
What is Photosynthesis?Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy into chemical energy. During this process, carbon dioxide and water are used to produce glucose and oxygen. It is vital for life on Earth because it provides food and oxygen.
The Equation for PhotosynthesisThe chemical equation for photosynthesis is: 6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2This means six molecules of carbon dioxide and six molecules of water are transformed into one molecule of glucose and six molecules of oxygen using sunlight.
Quick check: What is the primary purpose of photosynthesis?

Where Does Photosynthesis Occur?Photosynthesis mainly occurs in the chloroplasts of plant cells. Chloroplasts contain a green pigment called chlorophyll, which absorbs light energy. Most chloroplasts are found in the leaves, which are specially adapted for capturing sunlight.
The green pigment responsible for absorbing light is called {{blank0}}.

Limiting FactorsThe rate of photosynthesis can be affected by several factors: light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration, and temperature. If any of these factors is below the optimal level, photosynthesis may slow down.
