Welcome!Today we'll dive into percentages and percentage change, a key part of OCR GCSE Maths. You'll learn how to calculate percentages, percentage increases and decreases, as well as reverse percentages. Let's get started!
What are Percentages?Percentages are a way of expressing numbers as parts of 100. For example, 50% means 50 out of 100, or half. Percentages are useful for comparisons and understanding proportions.
Quick check: What does 25% mean?

Percentage ChangePercentage change measures how much a value has increased or decreased as a percentage of its original value. It's calculated using the formula: Percentage change = (Change / Original value) × 100.

Reverse PercentagesReverse percentages are used to find the original value before a percentage increase or decrease. For example, if a sale price is £80 after a 20% discount, you can calculate the original price by dividing by (1 - 0.2).
Quick check: If an item costs £120 after a 25% discount, what is the original price?

Working with PercentagesTo calculate a percentage of a number, multiply the number by the percentage (as a decimal). For example, to find 30% of £200, calculate: £200 × 0.3 = £60.

Percentage Increase and DecreasePercentage increase is when a value grows by a certain percentage. Calculate it using: New value = Original value × (1 + Percentage increase as decimal). For decreases, replace '+' with '-'.
An item costs £50. If the price increases by 20%, what will the new price be?
