Welcome!Today we'll explore the differences between Component 1 and Component 2 in WJEC Eduqas GCSE English Literature. By the end of this lesson, you'll understand the sections, timings, and weightings of each component. Let's get started!

What is Component 1?Component 1 focuses on two areas: Shakespeare and poetry. It makes up 40% of your final grade and lasts 2 hours

What is Component 2?Component 2 covers three areas: post-1914 prose/drama, 19th-century prose, and unseen poetry. This component is worth 60% of your final grade and lasts 2 hours 30 minutes

Section Breakdown: Component 1Section A (Shakespeare): You study one play from the list of prescribed texts (e.g., Macbeth, Othello). You'll answer two questions: one on an extract and another on the entire play.Section B (Poetry 1789–present): You study all poems in the anthology relevant to your assessment series (e.g., Blake, Owen, Duffy). You'll compare two poems in your response.

Section Breakdown: Component 2Section A (Post-1914 Prose/Drama): Study one text from the prescribed list (e.g., Lord of the Flies, An Inspector Calls). This section requires analysis of themes, characters, and language.Section B (19th-century Prose): Study one text from the prescribed list (e.g., Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre). You'll analyse an extract and discuss the text as a whole.Section C (Unseen Poetry): You analyse one unseen poem and compare it to another unseen poem, focusing on themes, language, and structure.
