Learn: Component 1 vs Component 2 - Sections, Timings, and Weightings

Welcome!Today we'll explore the differences between Component 1 and Component 2 for the WJEC Eduqas GCSE English Literature (C720QS) exam. By the end of this lesson, you'll have a clear understanding of their structure, timings, and mark weightings. Let's get started!

What is Component 1?Component 1 focuses on Shakespeare and Poetry (1789–present). It is worth 40% of the final grade and includes two sections.

Component 1 SectionsSection A: Shakespeare - You will study one play, such as Macbeth or Romeo and Juliet. This section tests your understanding of plot, themes, characters, and language.Section B: Poetry (1789–present) - This includes the poems in the WJEC Eduqas Poetry Anthology. You'll analyse language, form, structure, and themes, and compare two poems.

What is Component 2?Component 2 covers Post-1914 Prose/Drama, 19th-century Prose, and Unseen Poetry. This component is worth 60% of the final grade and includes three sections.

Component 2 SectionsSection A: Post-1914 Prose/Drama - You will study one text, such as An Inspector Calls or The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. This section tests your ability to analyse language, structure, form, and themes.Section B: 19th-century Prose - You will study one novel, such as Jane Eyre or A Christmas Carol. You must demonstrate contextual understanding and analyse themes and characters.Section C: Unseen Poetry - You will analyse one unseen poem and compare it to another unseen poem. This tests your ability to interpret new texts critically and evaluate language and structure.

Exam TimingsBoth components are assessed through written exams. Component 1 lasts 2 hours, while Component 2 is longer at 2 hours 30 minutes. Be sure to manage your time effectively during the exams!

Mark WeightingsEach component has specific weightings for assessment objectives. For Component 1, the breakdown is AO1 (15%), AO2 (15%), AO3 (7.5%), and AO4 (2.5%). For Component 2, the breakdown is AO1 (25%), AO2 (25%), AO3 (7.5%), and AO4 (2.5%).
