Welcome!Today we'll explore the fascinating world of animal and plant cells. You'll learn about their structures and functions, and how they work together to keep organisms alive.
What Are Cells?Cells are the basic building blocks of all living things. They are the smallest units of life and can carry out all the processes needed to sustain it. Animal and plant cells share many features but also have some unique structures.
Animal Cell StructuresAnimal cells contain key structures: nucleus (controls cell activities), cytoplasm (site of chemical reactions), cell membrane (controls what enters and leaves the cell), and mitochondria (produces energy through respiration).
Plant Cell StructuresPlant cells have all the structures found in animal cells, plus some extras: a cell wall (provides support), chloroplasts (site of photosynthesis), and a large central vacuole (stores water and nutrients).
Which structure is found only in plant cells?
Start the lesson to answer this multiple choice question
The NucleusThe nucleus is the control centre of the cell. It contains DNA, which holds the instructions for making proteins and controlling cell activities.
The {{blank0}} is the control centre of the cell, containing {{blank1}} that directs its activities.

MitochondriaMitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell. They release energy through aerobic respiration, using glucose and oxygen to produce ATP (energy). Without mitochondria, cells wouldn't be able to function properly.

Plant Cell ExtrasPlant cells have extra structures for their roles in photosynthesis and support. The cell wall gives the cell strength, while chloroplasts contain chlorophyll for photosynthesis. The vacuole stores water and nutrients, helping to maintain cell pressure.
Which of the following are features of plant cells? (Select all that apply)
