Tone
The overall attitude or feeling conveyed by the writer through their language choices.
Examples of tone
Examples include formal, informal, humorous, serious, sarcastic, optimistic, pessimistic, and reflective.
How tone is created
Tone is created through word choice, sentence structure, figurative language, and imagery.
Formal tone
A tone that uses sophisticated vocabulary, complex sentence structures, and avoids colloquial language.
Informal tone
A tone that uses casual language, contractions, and may include slang or conversational phrases.
Analysing tone
Identify specific words or phrases that reveal the writer's attitude and explain their effect on the reader.
Tone vs Mood
Tone refers to the writer's attitude, while mood refers to the atmosphere or feeling experienced by the reader.
Sarcastic tone
A tone that uses irony or mockery to convey contempt or humour.
Optimistic tone
A tone that conveys hopefulness or positivity about a subject or situation.
Pessimistic tone
A tone that conveys negativity or doubt about a subject or situation.
