Tense
The time frame in which a verb's action occurs, such as past, present, or future.
Past tense
Used to describe actions or events that have already happened, e.g., 'She walked to school.'
Present tense
Used to describe actions happening now or general truths, e.g., 'He walks to school.'
Future tense
Used to describe actions that will happen, e.g., 'They will walk to school.'
Consistent tense usage
Maintaining the same tense throughout a piece of writing to avoid confusion.
Tense shift
A change in tense within a text, which can be intentional or unintentional.
Unintentional tense shift
Occurs when a writer accidentally changes tense, leading to a lack of clarity or coherence.
Intentional tense shift
Used deliberately to show a change in time or perspective, e.g., flashbacks or predictions.

Can create confusion if unintentional, or enhance storytelling if used deliberately and effectively.
Checking tense accuracy
Reviewing writing to ensure tense consistency and correct usage, as required by AO6.
