Structure
The organisation of ideas and events across the whole text, including order, shifts, contrast, openings and endings, and paragraphing.
Narrative viewpoint
The perspective from which a story is told, such as first-person, second-person, or third-person.
Opening
The beginning of a text, designed to engage the reader and introduce key ideas, characters, or settings.
Ending
The conclusion of a text, which may resolve the narrative, leave questions unanswered, or create a lasting impression.
Shifts in focus
Changes in the focus of the text, such as moving between characters, settings, or ideas to create interest or tension.
Sequencing
The order in which events or ideas are presented in a text, which can be chronological or non-chronological.
Contrast
The use of opposing ideas, characters, or settings to highlight differences and create interest or tension.
Paragraphing
The division of text into logical units of meaning, helping to organise ideas and guide the reader.
Pacing
The speed at which the narrative or ideas progress, which can be varied to create tension or emphasis.
Repetition
The repeated use of words, phrases, or ideas to emphasise key points or create a pattern within the text.
