Explicit meaning
Information or ideas that are stated directly in the text.
Implicit meaning
Information or ideas that are implied and must be inferred by the reader.
Inference
The process of drawing conclusions from evidence and reasoning rather than explicit statements.
Synthesis
Combining information from more than one text to form a concise, combined understanding.
Language methods
Techniques used by writers, such as word choice, figurative language, imagery, and rhetorical devices.
Structure
The organisation of ideas and events across the whole text, including order, shifts, contrast, openings, endings, and paragraphing.
Viewpoint
The writer's position or attitude towards a subject or theme.
Perspective
The way experiences and ideas are presented from a particular position or angle.
Evaluation
Making critical judgements about how effectively ideas are conveyed in a text, supported by textual references.
Subject terminology
Specific terms used to describe language and structural choices, such as metaphor, simile, juxtaposition, and narrative viewpoint.
