Ratio
A way of comparing two or more quantities, showing the relative sizes of the quantities.
Simplifying a ratio
Divide all parts of the ratio by their highest common factor (HCF).
Dividing a quantity in a ratio
Add the parts of the ratio, divide the total quantity by the sum of the parts, then multiply by each part of the ratio.
Equivalent ratios
Ratios that represent the same relationship, found by multiplying or dividing all parts of the ratio by the same number.
Scaling a ratio
Multiply or divide all parts of the ratio by the same number to scale it up or down.
Ratio in simplest form
A ratio where the numbers have no common factors other than 1.
Using ratios in recipes
Adjust the quantities of ingredients by scaling the ratio to match the required total amount.
Converting ratios to fractions
Write each part of the ratio as a fraction of the total (e.g., for 2:3, write 2/5 and 3/5).
Ratio and proportion
A relationship where two ratios are equal, often used to solve problems involving scaling or sharing.
Unit ratio
A ratio where one part is reduced to 1 (e.g., 3:6 becomes 1:2).
