Ratio
A way of comparing two or more quantities, showing the relative sizes of these quantities.
Simplifying a ratio
Divide all parts of the ratio by their highest common factor (HCF).
Equivalent ratios
Ratios that represent the same relationship between quantities, e.g., 2:4 is equivalent to 1:2.
Dividing a quantity in a ratio
Add the parts of the ratio, divide the total quantity by the sum of the parts, then multiply by each part of the ratio.
Ratio notation
Ratios are written using a colon, e.g., 3:2.
Scaling a ratio
Multiply or divide all parts of the ratio by the same number to scale it up or down.
Sharing £60 in the ratio 2:3
Add the parts (2+3=5), divide £60 by 5 (£12), then multiply £12 by 2 and 3 to get £24 and £36.
Converting a ratio to a fraction
Write each part of the ratio as a fraction of the total, e.g., 2:3 becomes 2/5 and 3/5.
Ratio and proportion
Ratios can be used to solve problems involving proportional relationships, such as scaling recipes or maps.
Simplifying a ratio with different units
Convert all quantities to the same unit before simplifying the ratio.
