Pronoun
A word that replaces a noun to avoid repetition, e.g., he, she, it, they.
Personal pronouns
Pronouns that refer to specific people or things, e.g., I, you, he, she, it, we, they.
Possessive pronouns
Pronouns that show ownership, e.g., mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs.
Reflexive pronouns
Pronouns used when the subject and object of a sentence are the same, e.g., myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves.
Demonstrative pronouns
Pronouns that point to specific things, e.g., this, that, these, those.
Relative pronouns
Pronouns that introduce relative clauses, e.g., who, whom, whose, which, that.
Interrogative pronouns
Pronouns used to ask questions, e.g., who, whom, whose, which, what.
Indefinite pronouns
Pronouns that refer to non-specific people or things, e.g., someone, anyone, everyone, no one, something, anything, everything, nothing.
Pronouns and cohesion
Pronouns help link ideas in writing by referring back to previously mentioned nouns, aiding cohesion.
Pronouns and register
The choice of pronouns can affect the tone and formality of writing, e.g., 'we' for inclusivity or 'one' for formality.
