Perpendicular Bisector
A line that divides another line segment into two equal parts at a 90° angle.
Key Property of Perpendicular Bisector
Every point on the perpendicular bisector is equidistant from the endpoints of the line segment it bisects.
Constructing a Perpendicular Bisector (Step 1)
Place the compass at one endpoint of the line segment and draw an arc above and below the line.
Constructing a Perpendicular Bisector (Step 2)
Without changing the compass width, repeat the process from the other endpoint of the line segment.
Constructing a Perpendicular Bisector (Step 3)
Mark the points where the arcs intersect above and below the line segment.
Constructing a Perpendicular Bisector (Step 4)
Draw a straight line through the points of intersection of the arcs. This is the perpendicular bisector.
Perpendicular Bisector in a Triangle
The perpendicular bisectors of a triangle meet at a single point called the circumcentre.
Circumcentre
The point where the perpendicular bisectors of a triangle intersect. It is equidistant from all three vertices of the triangle.
Use of Perpendicular Bisector in Geometry
Used to find the midpoint of a line segment and to construct the circumcircle of a triangle.
Equation of a Perpendicular Bisector
To find the equation, calculate the midpoint of the line segment and the negative reciprocal of the gradient of the line segment.
