Adding a negative number
Adding a negative number is the same as subtracting the positive equivalent. For example, 5 + (-3) = 5 - 3 = 2.
Subtracting a negative number
Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding the positive equivalent. For example, 5 - (-3) = 5 + 3 = 8.
Multiplying two negative numbers
The product of two negative numbers is positive. For example, (-4) × (-3) = 12.
Multiplying a positive and a negative number
The product of a positive and a negative number is negative. For example, 4 × (-3) = -12.
Dividing two negative numbers
The quotient of two negative numbers is positive. For example, (-12) ÷ (-3) = 4.

Order of operations with negative numbers
Follow BIDMAS (Brackets, Indices, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction) when working with negative numbers.

Negative numbers are to the left of zero on a number line. For example, -3 is to the left of -2.
Comparing negative numbers
A larger negative number is smaller in value. For example, -5 is smaller than -3.

The square of a negative number is positive. For example, (-3)² = 9.
