Frequency table
A table that shows how often each value or group of values occurs in a data set.
Mean
The average of a set of numbers, calculated by dividing the total of all values by the number of values.
Step 1: Multiply values by frequencies
For each row in the frequency table, multiply the value (or midpoint for grouped data) by its frequency.
Step 2: Find the total of the products
Add up all the products from Step 1 to get the total of the values.
Step 3: Find the total frequency
Add up all the frequencies in the table to get the total number of data points.
Step 4: Calculate the mean
Divide the total of the products (Step 2) by the total frequency (Step 3).
Grouped frequency table
A frequency table where data is grouped into intervals (e.g., 0-10, 10-20).
Midpoint in grouped data
The value halfway between the lower and upper bounds of a group. Used as the representative value for that group.
Why use midpoints in grouped data?
Exact values are not known in grouped data, so midpoints are used as an estimate for each group.
Mean formula for frequency tables
Mean = (Sum of values × frequencies) ÷ Total frequency.
