Mean (definition)
The mean is the average of a set of numbers, calculated by dividing the sum of the numbers by how many numbers there are.
Formula for Mean
Mean = (Sum of all values) ÷ (Number of values).
Finding the Mean from a List
Add all the numbers in the list together, then divide by the total number of numbers.
Mean from a Frequency Table
Multiply each value by its frequency, add these results together, then divide by the total frequency.
Grouped Frequency Table (Mean)
Use the midpoints of the groups to estimate the mean: (Sum of midpoint × frequency) ÷ Total frequency.
Effect of Adding a Constant to All Values on the Mean
If a constant is added to all values, the mean increases by the same constant.
Effect of Multiplying All Values by a Constant on the Mean
If all values are multiplied by a constant, the mean is also multiplied by the same constant.
Mean vs Median
The mean is affected by extreme values (outliers), while the median is not.
Interpreting the Mean
The mean represents the 'fair share' or 'average' value of a data set.
Limitations of the Mean
The mean can be misleading if the data set contains extreme values or is not evenly distributed.
