Simple sentence
A sentence with one independent clause, containing a subject and a verb.
Compound sentence
A sentence with two or more independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (e.g., and, but, or).
Complex sentence
A sentence with one independent clause and at least one dependent clause, often joined by subordinating conjunctions (e.g., because, although, when).
Clause
A group of words containing a subject and a verb. Can be independent or dependent.
Coordinating conjunctions
Words used to join independent clauses in compound sentences (e.g., for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).
Subordinating conjunctions
Words used to join dependent clauses to independent clauses in complex sentences (e.g., because, although, since, unless).
Subject-verb agreement
Ensuring the subject and verb in a sentence match in number (singular/plural).
Active voice
A sentence structure where the subject performs the action (e.g., 'The dog chased the ball').
Passive voice
A sentence structure where the subject receives the action (e.g., 'The ball was chased by the dog').
Punctuation for clarity
Using punctuation marks (e.g., commas, colons, semi-colons) to ensure sentences are clear and unambiguous.
