Fraction of an amount
To find a fraction of an amount, multiply the amount by the numerator and divide by the denominator.
1/2 of 20
1/2 of 20 is 20 ÷ 2 = 10.
1/4 of 36
1/4 of 36 is 36 ÷ 4 = 9.
3/5 of 50
3/5 of 50 is (50 ÷ 5) × 3 = 30.
Finding 2/3 of 18
2/3 of 18 is (18 ÷ 3) × 2 = 12.
Simplifying fractions before multiplying
Simplify the fraction first if possible to make calculations easier.
Mixed number fractions of amounts
Convert the mixed number to an improper fraction before finding the fraction of the amount.
Example: 1 1/2 of 24
Convert 1 1/2 to 3/2. Then, 3/2 of 24 is (24 ÷ 2) × 3 = 36.
Checking your answer
Use estimation to check if your answer is reasonable when finding a fraction of an amount.
Real-life example of fractions of amounts
If a recipe needs 2/3 of 300g of flour, calculate (300 ÷ 3) × 2 = 200g.
