Fraction
A mathematical expression representing a part of a whole, written as a/b where a is the numerator and b is the denominator.
Simplifying fractions
Divide the numerator and denominator by their highest common factor (HCF) to reduce the fraction to its simplest form.
Adding fractions
Find a common denominator, convert the fractions, then add the numerators and keep the denominator the same.
Subtracting fractions
Find a common denominator, convert the fractions, then subtract the numerators and keep the denominator the same.
Multiplying fractions
Multiply the numerators together and multiply the denominators together. Simplify the result if possible.
Dividing fractions
Flip the second fraction (find its reciprocal), then multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second.
Converting improper fractions to mixed numbers
Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole number, and the remainder becomes the numerator of the fraction.
Converting mixed numbers to improper fractions
Multiply the whole number by the denominator, then add the numerator. Place this result over the original denominator.
Fraction of an amount
Multiply the fraction by the amount. Simplify the result if possible.
Equivalent fractions
Fractions that represent the same value. Multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same number to find equivalent fractions.
