Forming an equation
The process of translating a word problem or situation into a mathematical equation using variables, numbers, and operations.
Variable in an equation
A letter or symbol used to represent an unknown value in an equation.
Key step in forming equations
Identify the unknowns, assign variables, and use the information given to set up a mathematical relationship.
Equation for 'twice a number is 10'
2x = 10
Equation for 'a number decreased by 5 is 12'
x - 5 = 12
Equation for 'the sum of a number and 7 is 15'
x + 7 = 15
Equation for 'three times a number is equal to 21'
3x = 21
Equation for 'a number divided by 4 is 8'
x ÷ 4 = 8 or x/4 = 8
Using brackets in equations
Brackets are used to group terms, e.g., 2(x + 3) = 14 means 2 times the sum of x and 3 equals 14.
Solving equations after forming them
Use inverse operations to isolate the variable and find its value.
