Equivalent Ratios
Ratios that represent the same relationship between quantities, even if the numbers are scaled up or down.
Simplifying Ratios
Divide all parts of the ratio by their highest common factor (HCF) to simplify it.
Scaling Up Ratios
Multiply all parts of the ratio by the same number to create an equivalent ratio.
Scaling Down Ratios
Divide all parts of the ratio by the same number to create an equivalent ratio.
Finding Missing Values in Ratios
Use the relationship between the parts of the ratio to find the missing value by scaling up or down.
Ratio in Simplest Form
A ratio is in its simplest form when the numbers in the ratio have no common factors other than 1.
Converting Ratios to Fractions
Write each part of the ratio as a fraction of the total (e.g., for 2:3, write 2/5 and 3/5).
Checking Equivalent Ratios
Two ratios are equivalent if the cross-products of their terms are equal (e.g., 2:3 and 4:6 are equivalent because 2×6 = 3×4).
Using Ratios in Real-Life Problems
Ratios can be used to compare quantities, divide amounts, or solve problems involving proportional relationships.
Ratio and Proportion
Ratios are closely related to proportion, which describes how one quantity changes in relation to another.
