Equation with fractions
An equation where one or more terms involve fractions.
Clearing fractions in an equation
Multiply through by the lowest common denominator (LCD) of all the fractions to eliminate the fractions.
Lowest common denominator (LCD)
The smallest number that is a multiple of the denominators of all the fractions in the equation.
Step 1 for solving equations with fractions
Identify the denominators of all the fractions in the equation.
Step 2 for solving equations with fractions
Find the lowest common denominator (LCD) of the fractions.
Step 3 for solving equations with fractions
Multiply every term in the equation by the LCD to eliminate the fractions.
Step 4 for solving equations with fractions
Simplify the resulting equation and solve for the unknown variable.
Example: Solve (x/3) + 2 = 5
Multiply through by 3 to get x + 6 = 15, then solve x = 9.
Checking solutions to equations with fractions
Substitute the solution back into the original equation to ensure it satisfies the equation.
Common mistake in equations with fractions
Forgetting to multiply every term in the equation by the LCD, including terms without fractions.
