Expand brackets
Multiply each term inside the bracket by the term outside the bracket.
Simplify after expanding
Combine like terms after expanding the brackets.
Solve linear equations with brackets
Expand the brackets, simplify, and isolate the variable to solve.
Distributive property
The rule used to expand brackets: a(b + c) = ab + ac.
Example: Expand 3(x + 4)
3(x + 4) = 3x + 12.
Example: Solve 2(x + 3) = 14
Expand to 2x + 6 = 14, then solve: 2x = 8, so x = 4.
Equations with brackets on both sides
Expand brackets on both sides, simplify, and solve for the variable.
Example: Solve 3(x - 2) = 2(x + 1)
Expand to 3x - 6 = 2x + 2, simplify to x = 8.
Factorising to solve equations
Reverse the process of expanding brackets to factorise and solve equations.
Check your solution
Substitute your solution back into the original equation to verify it works.
