Decimal place value
Each digit in a decimal number has a place value, such as tenths, hundredths, thousandths, etc.
Adding decimals
Align the decimal points and add as you would with whole numbers, placing the decimal point in the answer directly below the others.
Subtracting decimals
Align the decimal points and subtract as you would with whole numbers, keeping the decimal point in the same position.
Multiplying decimals
Ignore the decimal points and multiply as whole numbers. Count the total decimal places in the numbers and place the decimal point in the answer accordingly.
Dividing decimals
Move the decimal point in the divisor to make it a whole number, and do the same for the dividend. Then divide as usual.
Converting fractions to decimals
Divide the numerator by the denominator to convert a fraction into a decimal.
Converting decimals to fractions
Write the decimal as a fraction with a denominator of 10, 100, or 1000, depending on the number of decimal places, and simplify if possible.
Rounding decimals
Look at the digit after the place value you are rounding to. If it is 5 or more, round up; otherwise, round down.
Recurring decimals
A recurring decimal has one or more repeating digits. It is often written with a dot or line above the repeating part.
Estimating with decimals
Round the decimals to 1 or 2 significant figures to make calculations easier and quicker.
