Complex sentence
A sentence that contains one independent clause and at least one dependent (subordinate) clause.
Independent clause
A clause that can stand alone as a complete sentence because it expresses a complete thought.
Dependent clause
A clause that cannot stand alone as a complete sentence and depends on the independent clause to make sense.
Subordinating conjunction
A word or phrase that introduces a dependent clause, e.g., 'because', 'although', 'since', 'while'.
Example of a complex sentence
'Although it was raining, we decided to go for a walk.'
Purpose of complex sentences
To add depth and detail to writing by showing relationships between ideas.
Common subordinating conjunctions
Examples include 'if', 'when', 'because', 'although', 'since', 'while', 'unless', 'after', 'before'.
Punctuation in complex sentences
A comma is often used to separate the dependent clause from the independent clause when the dependent clause comes first.
Effect of complex sentences
They can make writing more sophisticated and help convey nuanced ideas or relationships between events.
Identifying complex sentences
Look for an independent clause and a dependent clause joined by a subordinating conjunction.
