Bar Chart
A diagram that uses bars to represent data. The height or length of each bar shows the frequency or value.
Vertical Axis on a Bar Chart
The axis that shows the frequency or value of the data. It is usually labelled with numbers.
Horizontal Axis on a Bar Chart
The axis that shows the categories or groups being compared.
Equal Width Bars
In a bar chart, all bars must have the same width to ensure accurate comparison.
Gaps Between Bars
Bars in a bar chart should have gaps between them to show that the data is discrete (not continuous).
Frequency
The number of times a value or category occurs, represented by the height or length of a bar in a bar chart.
Grouped Data in Bar Charts
When data is grouped into intervals or categories, each bar represents the frequency of a group.
Comparing Data in Bar Charts
Bar charts can be used to compare data across different categories by comparing the heights of the bars.
Labelling Axes
Both axes of a bar chart must be clearly labelled to show what the data represents.
Misleading Bar Charts
Bar charts can be misleading if the vertical axis does not start at zero or if the bars are not drawn to scale.
