Area of a rectangle formula
Area = length × width
Unit for area of a rectangle
Square units (e.g., cm², m²)
Length of a rectangle
The longer side of the rectangle.
Width of a rectangle
The shorter side of the rectangle.
Calculate area: length = 5 cm, width = 3 cm
Area = 5 × 3 = 15 cm²
Calculate area: length = 7 m, width = 2 m
Area = 7 × 2 = 14 m²
Find width: area = 20 cm², length = 4 cm
Width = Area ÷ Length = 20 ÷ 4 = 5 cm
Find length: area = 36 m², width = 6 m
Length = Area ÷ Width = 36 ÷ 6 = 6 m
What happens to the area if both length and width are doubled?
The area becomes 4 times larger.
What happens to the area if the length is halved and the width stays the same?
The area is halved.
