Compound shape
A shape made up of two or more simple shapes, such as rectangles, triangles, or circles.
Finding area of a compound shape
Split the compound shape into simpler shapes, calculate the area of each, and then add or subtract the areas as needed.
Area of a rectangle
Length × Width.
Area of a triangle
1/2 × Base × Height.
Area of a circle
π × Radius².
Decomposing a compound shape
Divide the shape into rectangles, triangles, or other simple shapes to make calculations easier.
Overlapping areas in compound shapes
If shapes overlap, calculate the area of each shape and subtract the overlapping part.
Units for area
Always express area in square units, such as cm², m², or mm².
Area of an L-shaped compound shape
Split the L-shape into two rectangles, calculate the area of each, and add them together.
Checking your answer for compound shapes
Ensure all parts of the shape are included, and double-check calculations for each section.
