AO2 Definition
Explain, comment on and analyse how writers use language and structure to achieve effects and influence readers, using relevant subject terminology to support views.
Language Methods
Choice of words and phrases, figurative language, imagery, rhetorical devices as relevant to the text.
Structure Methods
Organisation of ideas and events across the whole text, including order, shifts, contrast, openings and endings, paragraphing.
Subject Terminology
Key terms used to label language and structural choices, such as metaphor, simile, juxtaposition, narrative viewpoint, etc.
Effect on Reader
The impact of the writer's choices on the reader, such as creating tension, evoking emotion, or influencing perspective.
Figurative Language
Language that uses figures of speech, such as metaphor, simile, personification, and symbolism, to create imagery or convey meaning.
Narrative Viewpoint
The perspective from which the story is told, such as first-person, third-person, or omniscient narrator.
Shifts in Focus
Changes in the focus or perspective within a text, such as moving from a broad description to a specific detail.
Openings and Endings
How the writer begins and concludes the text to engage the reader and leave a lasting impression.
Paragraphing
The use of logical units of meaning to organise ideas effectively and create cohesion within the text.
