Fraction
A number that represents a part of a whole, written in the form a/b where a is the numerator and b is the denominator.
Numerator
The top number in a fraction, representing how many parts are being considered.
Denominator
The bottom number in a fraction, representing the total number of equal parts.
Adding fractions with the same denominator
Add the numerators and keep the denominator the same.
Adding fractions with different denominators
Find a common denominator, rewrite the fractions with this denominator, then add the numerators.
Lowest Common Denominator (LCD)
The smallest number that is a multiple of the denominators of two or more fractions.
Simplifying fractions
Divide the numerator and denominator by their highest common factor (HCF) to write the fraction in its simplest form.
Improper fraction
A fraction where the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator.
Mixed number
A number that consists of an integer and a proper fraction.
Converting improper fractions to mixed numbers
Divide the numerator by the denominator to get the integer part, and use the remainder as the numerator of the fraction part.
