Primary storage
Fast, volatile memory used for immediate data access, e.g., RAM and cache.
RAM
Random Access Memory, volatile memory used for temporary data storage while programs run.
ROM
Read-Only Memory, non-volatile memory storing essential start-up instructions.
Virtual memory
Using secondary storage as extra RAM when physical RAM is full.
Cache
Very fast, small memory close to the CPU for frequently accessed data.
Secondary storage
Non-volatile storage for long-term data retention, e.g., hard drives, SSDs.
Optical storage
Uses lasers to read/write data, e.g., CDs, DVDs. Portable but slower and less durable.
Magnetic storage
Uses magnetic fields to store data, e.g., hard drives. High capacity and reliable.
Solid state storage
Uses flash memory, e.g., SSDs. Fast, durable, and portable but more expensive.
Data units
Bit, nibble (4 bits), byte (8 bits), KB, MB, GB, TB, PB.
Binary storage
Data is stored in binary (0s and 1s) because computers use digital signals.
File size formula for sound
Sample rate × duration (s) × bit depth.
File size formula for images
Colour depth × image height (px) × image width (px).
