Compression
The process of reducing the size of a file to save storage space and make transferring files faster.
Lossy compression
Removes data permanently to reduce file size. Results in lower quality but smaller files.
Lossless compression
Reduces file size without losing any data. Original file can be restored completely.
Effects of compression on file size
Compression reduces file size, making it easier to store and transfer files.
Effects of compression on transferring files
Smaller file sizes mean faster transfer speeds and reduced bandwidth usage.
Effects of compression on storing files
Compressed files take up less storage space, allowing more files to be stored on a device.
Advantages of lossy compression
Significantly reduces file size, making it ideal for streaming and sharing media files.
Disadvantages of lossy compression
Data is permanently removed, which can result in noticeable quality loss in images, audio, or video.
Examples of lossless compression
ZIP files and PNG images use lossless compression to retain all original data.
