Terms in this set (8)

1

Xylem

Transports water and mineral ions from roots to leaves. Made of dead cells and strengthened with lignin.

2

Phloem

Transports dissolved sugars and other nutrients throughout the plant. Made of living cells.

3

Stomata

Small openings on the underside of leaves that allow gas exchange (CO2 in, O2 out).

4

Guard cells

Control the opening and closing of stomata to regulate water loss and gas exchange.

5

Chloroplasts

Organelles in plant cells where photosynthesis occurs. Contain chlorophyll to absorb light energy.

6

Root hair cells

Specialised cells in roots that increase surface area for water and mineral absorption.

7

Palisade mesophyll

Layer of cells in leaves packed with chloroplasts for maximum photosynthesis.

8

Spongy mesophyll

Layer of cells in leaves with air spaces to allow gas exchange.
