Battle of Mons (August 1914)
The first major battle involving British forces. The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) delayed the German advance but was forced to retreat.
First Battle of the Marne (September 1914)
A decisive Allied victory that stopped the German advance towards Paris and led to the establishment of trench warfare.
Battle of Ypres (October-November 1914)
The first of several battles at Ypres. Marked the start of the stalemate on the Western Front.
Battle of Verdun (February-December 1916)
A prolonged battle between France and Germany. Symbolised French determination and resulted in massive casualties on both sides.
Battle of the Somme (July-November 1916)
A major Allied offensive aimed at breaking the stalemate. Known for its high casualties and the first use of tanks in warfare. Major strategic failure for allies
Battle of Passchendaele (July-November 1917)
Also known as the Third Battle of Ypres. Fought in terrible conditions, it highlighted the horrors of trench warfare.
Spring Offensive (March-July 1918)
Germany's last major offensive, aiming to break through Allied lines before American reinforcements arrived. Initially successful but ultimately failed.
Hundred Days Offensive (August-November 1918)
A series of Allied attacks that led to the collapse of German forces and the end of the war.
