Formula
A mathematical rule or relationship expressed using symbols.
Variable
A symbol, usually a letter, that represents an unknown value in a formula.
Expression vs Formula
An expression is a mathematical phrase without an equals sign, while a formula includes an equals sign and shows a relationship between variables.
Substitution
Replacing variables in a formula with specific values to calculate a result.
Rearranging Formulae
The process of changing the subject of a formula by isolating a specific variable.
Example: Area of a Rectangle
A = l × w, where A is the area, l is the length, and w is the width.
Example: Speed Formula
Speed = Distance ÷ Time, where speed is the subject of the formula.
Example: Density Formula
Density = Mass ÷ Volume, where density is the subject of the formula.
Example: Rearranging Speed Formula for Time
Time = Distance ÷ Speed, rearranged to make time the subject.
Units in Formulae
Always ensure that the units used in a formula are consistent (e.g., metres for distance, seconds for time).
