Expression
A mathematical phrase that combines numbers, variables, and operations but does not include an equals sign.
Variable
A letter or symbol used to represent an unknown value in an expression or equation.
Coefficient
The numerical factor of a term that contains a variable (e.g., in 3x, the coefficient is 3).
Constant
A term in an expression that does not contain a variable (e.g., in 5x + 7, the constant is 7).
Simplifying Expressions
The process of combining like terms to make an expression shorter or easier to work with.
Like Terms
Terms in an expression that have the same variable(s) raised to the same power (e.g., 2x and 5x are like terms).
Expanding Brackets
The process of multiplying each term inside a bracket by the term outside the bracket (e.g., a(b + c) = ab + ac).
Factorising Expressions
The process of writing an expression as a product of its factors (e.g., 6x + 9 = 3(2x + 3)).
Substitution
Replacing a variable in an expression with a specific value to calculate the result.
Algebraic Term
A single part of an expression, which can be a number, a variable, or a product of both (e.g., 4x, -3y, or 7).
