SOHCAHTOA
A mnemonic to remember the trigonometric ratios: Sine = Opposite / Hypotenuse, Cosine = Adjacent / Hypotenuse, Tangent = Opposite / Adjacent.
Sine (sin) ratio
Sine of an angle = Opposite side / Hypotenuse.
Cosine (cos) ratio
Cosine of an angle = Adjacent side / Hypotenuse.
Tangent (tan) ratio
Tangent of an angle = Opposite side / Adjacent side.
Hypotenuse
The longest side of a right-angled triangle, opposite the right angle.
Opposite side
The side opposite the angle being considered in a right-angled triangle.
Adjacent side
The side next to the angle being considered in a right-angled triangle, excluding the hypotenuse.
Finding an angle using sine
Use sin⁻¹ (inverse sine) on a calculator: angle = sin⁻¹(Opposite / Hypotenuse).
Finding an angle using cosine
Use cos⁻¹ (inverse cosine) on a calculator: angle = cos⁻¹(Adjacent / Hypotenuse).
Finding an angle using tangent
Use tan⁻¹ (inverse tangent) on a calculator: angle = tan⁻¹(Opposite / Adjacent).
