Tangent to a circle
A straight line that touches a circle at exactly one point.
Point of tangency
The point where a tangent touches the circle.
Tangent and radius property
A tangent to a circle is perpendicular to the radius drawn to the point of tangency.
Angle between tangent and radius
The angle between a tangent and the radius at the point of tangency is 90°.
Tangents from a common point
Two tangents drawn to a circle from the same external point are equal in length.
Tangents and external point property
The line joining the external point to the centre of the circle bisects the angle between the two tangents.
Tangent and chord property
The angle between a tangent and a chord through the point of contact is equal to the angle in the alternate segment.
Alternate segment theorem
The angle between a tangent and a chord at the point of contact is equal to the angle in the opposite segment of the circle.
Number of tangents to a circle
A circle can have an infinite number of tangents, but only one tangent at any given point on the circle.
Tangent and secant difference
A tangent touches the circle at one point, while a secant intersects the circle at two points.
