Square root
A value that, when multiplied by itself, gives the original number.
Symbol for square root
The square root symbol is √.
Square root of 16
The square root of 16 is 4, because 4 × 4 = 16.
Square root of 25
The square root of 25 is 5, because 5 × 5 = 25.
Square root of a non-square number
The square root of a non-square number (e.g., 20) is an irrational number, which cannot be written as a simple fraction.
Negative square roots
Every positive number has two square roots: one positive and one negative (e.g., √16 = 4 and -4).
Square root of 0
The square root of 0 is 0, because 0 × 0 = 0.
Simplifying square roots
Square roots can sometimes be simplified (e.g., √50 = √(25 × 2) = 5√2).
Square root of 1
The square root of 1 is 1, because 1 × 1 = 1.
Estimating square roots
To estimate a square root, find the two closest perfect squares. For example, √45 is between √36 (6) and √49 (7).
