Speed formula
Speed = Distance ÷ Time
Distance formula
Distance = Speed × Time
Time formula
Time = Distance ÷ Speed
Units of speed
Common units of speed include m/s, km/h, and mph.
Converting km/h to m/s
Divide the speed in km/h by 3.6 to convert to m/s.
Converting m/s to km/h
Multiply the speed in m/s by 3.6 to convert to km/h.
Average speed
Average speed = Total distance ÷ Total time.
Distance-time graph: gradient meaning
The gradient of a distance-time graph represents speed.
Horizontal line on distance-time graph
A horizontal line on a distance-time graph means the object is stationary.
Non-linear distance-time graph
A curved line on a distance-time graph indicates changing speed (acceleration or deceleration).
