Simplifying expressions
The process of combining like terms and reducing an expression to its simplest form.
Like terms
Terms that have the same variable(s) raised to the same power, e.g., 3x and 5x.
Combining like terms
Add or subtract the coefficients of like terms, e.g., 3x + 5x = 8x.
Simplify: 4x + 3x - 2x
Combine like terms: 4x + 3x - 2x = 5x.
Simplify: 2a + 3b - a + 4b
Combine like terms: 2a - a + 3b + 4b = a + 7b.
Simplify: 5x² + 3x - 2x² + 4x
Combine like terms: 5x² - 2x² + 3x + 4x = 3x² + 7x.
Simplify: 6y - 2(y + 3)
Expand and simplify: 6y - 2y - 6 = 4y - 6.
Expand and simplify: 3(x + 2) + 2(x - 1)
Expand: 3x + 6 + 2x - 2. Simplify: 5x + 4.
Simplify: 4a²b + 3ab² - 2a²b + 5ab²
Combine like terms: (4a²b - 2a²b) + (3ab² + 5ab²) = 2a²b + 8ab².
Simplify: 2x(3x + 4) - x(5x - 2)
Expand: 6x² + 8x - 5x² + 2x. Simplify: x² + 10x.
